How to Create a Custom Audience in Facebook and How to Target Them

Are you using Facebook as a platform to advertise your products? Are you searching for effective ways to reach your target market? Then you need to consider using Facebook Custom Audience.

Custom Audience is Facebook Ads’ targeted advertising service. It lets businesses import their user email addresses. In turn, businesses can retarget their contextual advertisements directly to relevant consumers.

This is crucial considering that there are over 2.3 billion Facebook users in the world. But how does one use the Custom Audience feature?

Continue reading below as we teach you how to create a custom audience on Facebook. We will also guide you on how to target your Custom Audiences the right way.

How To Create A Custom Audience In Facebook Effectively

The idea behind Facebook Ad targeting is to zoom in specifically on your market. This involves key elements like Facebook behavioural targeting. Another is identifying demographic targets.

However, some businesses are having a hard time getting approval for their Facebook Ads. The same thing may happen if you’re using a Custom Audience for the first time. Let us now teach you how to create a Custom Audience on Facebook without the complications.

From Your Customer List

There are four ways to create a Custom Audience. The first one is through your customer list. Before we proceed with the steps, you must first prepare your list in advance.

This list may feature past customers. It may also showcase the names of your newsletter subscribers. The bottom line is that the people on the list already expressed interest in your brand.

After finalizing your list, follow these steps below:

Go to Ads Manager and open your Facebook Audiences page. Click the “Create a Custom Audience” option. This step also applies to the next two types of Custom Audience options.

Click on “Customer File” and pick between adding your customer information or importing your list from MailChimp. If you pick the latter, you will need to input your MailChimp login credentials.

You will then encounter the Custom Audience terms of service. Carefully read and understand the terms then hit “I Accept.”

Next, you need to prep your customer list. Start by creating separate columns for the first names and surnames. Moreover, you want to include phone numbers and their respective country codes.
Additionally, create a separate column for the country.

Now you are ready to upload your customer data file. When uploading, make sure the file is in.TXT or.CSV format. Don’t forget to label your audience accordingly before hitting “Next.”

Wait for about 30 minutes or so and allow Facebook to prepare your Custom Audience.

From Your Website

To create Custom Audiences from your website, you must first install Facebook Pixel. From there, follow these simple steps:

Click on “Create a Custom Audience” and select “Website Traffic.” From there, choose the pixel that you wish to build your audience on.

Pick the type of users you want to target. They can be people who visited certain pages or those who visited your site and stayed for a certain period. You may also select all visitors who checked out your site.

Assign a name for your Audience and hit “Create Audience.” Wait for about half an hour until Facebook finishes creating your Custom Audience.

From Your Mobile App

You can also create Customer Audiences based on your mobile app. Here’s how you do it:

In “Create a Custom Audience,” select App Activity. Open the drop-down menu and pick the events that you wish to target.

Pick the timeframe that you plan to target. You can choose between 30 and 180 days.

Go over the details such as the device they use or their in-app purchases. Define your audience using these factors.

Assign a name to your Audience and hit “Create Audience.”

Engagement Custom Audiences

Last but not least, you can create Engagement Custom Audiences. Simply follow the steps below:

Click on “Engagement” to open a pop-up screen. The screen will ask if you want to create an Engagement Audience using different factors. These include the ways users interact with your Facebook page, Instagram account, events, and videos, among others.

Next, you will pick the options that you prefer. Thereafter, select a timeframe. You can target up to one full year.

Assign a name to your audience and hit “Create Audience” to complete the process.

How To Target Your Custom Audience

Now that you have your Custom Audiences, your next goal is to target them effectively. Here are some valuable tips to consider:

Use The Same Language

To target your Custom Audiences, you need to learn how to speak their language. This means non-typical word expressions and slang that a niche audience may be using. Use the Online Slang Dictionary to get an idea about the language your target market uses.

Make a list of the words and incorporate them in your Facebook posts. Make sure to use those words when responding to comments and inquiries.

Focus On Their Interests

Focus on your audiences’ interests. Reinforce their interests by posting quotes and images that appeal to their emotions. You want to post content that your custom audiences will like and share.

Align With Their Social Stance

Learn how to align with the social stance of your custom audience. Show support for what they are fighting for especially if it involves a controversial topic.

If you are targeting the female market, post content about strong female role models. If your audience is amateur basketball players, post content that will inspire them to play harder.
